The Computational Social Science program is committed to providing and referring holistic wellness resources and programming for you to thrive and the University and beyond. We recognize that a healthy social life and self-care are valuable components to academic success and personal wellbeing. Working with a variety of campus partners and community partners, we seek to focus on wellness and social events on the Seven Facets of Wellness as the UChicago model to promote balance in our lives. We actively encourage and promote the use of campus-wide resources in conjunction with our departmental offerings shared in a quarterly calendar.

Programming

Workshops and Sessions

Working with our campus and community partners, we are pleased to offer 60 to 120-minute workshops and sessions on a variety of wellness topics.  These include: Time & Stress Management, Positive Psychology & Winter Wellness, Mindful Meditation, Sleep Health, Art Therapy workshops in partnership with Hyde Park Arts Center, Yoga Nidra, and Mindful Movement.

Quarterly Stress Relief Breaks

Each quarter, we hold a Stress Relief Break during midterms week to provide a space for you to relax and recharge. Held in our student lounge at 5730 S. Woodlawn, we host free back massages by professional therapists, a resource and giveaway station, snacks, arts and kinetics station, and a special seasonal activity.

Excursions

Taking time away from campus to gain perspective and reduce stress from a typical routine can help boost productivity and prevent fatigue.  We are excited to offer opportunities for our students to have a change of pace and enjoy new experiences. Past excursions include: a haunted bike hike through downtown Chicago, Annual Ski Trip to Cascade Mountain, ice skating at the Midway Plaisance, Chicago White Sox Game, an outing to Starved Rock State Park, and river rafting in central Illinois.

Relationship Building

Interested in building a sustained relationship of support during your time in MAPSS? Alumni Connect pairs you with an alumni mentor for guidance, while Peer Links brings international and domestic current students together for peer-to peer-friendships. Learn more by visiting these program pages.

Weekly Newsletter and Quarterly Calendars

A Weekly Wellness & Social Newsletter is sent to all current students each Wednesday during the academic quarters. The newsletter contains information for departmental and campus-wide resources and events focused on students’ holistic well-being.

Quarterly Wellness & Social events calendars are posted on our website and distributed through email, social media, and paper copies in the student lounge. These events are exclusive to students in MAPSS, the Committee on International Relations, and Computational Social Sciences.
