Professor of Ecology and Evolution, Ecology and Evolution Graduate Program

Professor Bettencourt's research focuses on the theory and modeling of complex systems and the processes that underlie the structure and growth of cities, in particular. He uses many different quantitative methods including Bayesian inference, regression, networks, information theory, dynamical stochastic systems, and evolutionary population dynamics. He is especially interested in new and bigger data that can shed light on important questions in human societies such as human development, innovation, economic growth, spatial patterns of settlement and mobility, and issues of climate change and sustainability.
