Baihui Wang, First Year MACSS Student

Baihui Wang, originally from Dalian, China, has a strong interest in quantitative data analysis and is eager to expand her skills in programming, data processing, and machine learning. “My undergraduate background didn’t provide extensive training in programming or data processing,” she says.
Entering MACSS immediately after her undergraduate studies, she chose MACSS because of the strong technical training. She says, “MACSS aligns well with my academic background while also fulfilling my desire to develop specialized skills in computer science and data science.”
She plans a political science concentration and will pursue interdisciplinary opportunities, including courses in the Booth School of Business and the Department of Computer Science, for academic and industry experience. She notes that UChicago offers unparalleled academic freedom, allowing students to explore courses across all divisions: “My interests extend beyond the Social Sciences Division to include the Booth School of Business, the Data Science Institute, and the Department of Computer Science. This academic flexibility is unmatched by other institutions.”
During Winter Quarter, Wang is taking a course in deep learning and data analytics taught by Professor James Evans, noting she is eager to learn from his expertise in this field. Post-graduation, she aspires to build a career in data science.
Her advice for future applicants? “I recommend paying special attention to your writing sample, as it showcases your current academic achievements and abilities,” she says. For prospective students still in the earlier years of their undergraduate program, she encourages them to strengthen their transcript through advanced quantitative coursework. For those actively working on the application, she says “use your personal statement to thoughtfully articulate your motivation for joining the program, your preparation for it, and your future aspirations. Above all, convey your passion!”
